The Life I’m Learning to Keep #4 — Learning to Stay on Difficult Days

Not every chapter of Aureliane’s life feels like a fairytale.

Some days are beautiful. Some days remind her how far she has come. But there are also days like today—days when heated arguments erupt during a parliamentary meeting and leave her questioning herself all over again.

For a moment, Aureliane wonders if she is moving backward.

She once believed that healing would make difficult days disappear. She thought that once she had healed, fear would no longer follow her and self-doubt would no longer creep into her thoughts.

Yet whenever a major problem appears, she still finds herself slipping back into old habits. The frightened version of herself. The one who second-guesses every decision. The one who wants to run away when things become overwhelming.

And that realization hurts.

The Return of Heavy Days — But Some Days Still Feel Hard

Some mornings simply feel heavier than others.

Today begins with Princess Audrey’s cries echoing through the halls of Ironhall Citadel before sunrise. Before Aureliane can even gather her thoughts, she is already needed.

The kingdom’s financial reports await her attention. New disputes require mediation. Endless responsibilities pile up on her desk.

As Queen of Vaelcrest, she carries the burden of decisions that affect thousands of people.

On difficult days, fear arrives without warning.

What if she makes the wrong decision?

What if she fails her people?

What if her rivals laugh behind her back and call her incapable?

The fears are not always rational, but they feel real nonetheless.

The Urge to Disappear

Whenever life becomes too overwhelming, Aureliane’s first instinct is often to hide.

There are days when she wants to disappear completely.

She avoids meetings. She postpones conversations. Sometimes her ladies-in-waiting spend hours searching every corner of Ironhall Citadel because no one knows where their queen has gone.

More often than not, she is sitting alone in her office.

The room is quiet.

The paperwork remains untouched.

And for a little while, hiding feels easier than facing the world.

When One Bad Day Starts Feeling Like a Bigger Story

The problem with difficult days is that they rarely stay small.

One disagreement among the nobles becomes proof that she is a failure.

One political conflict becomes evidence that she is unfit to rule.

When influential families within the Kingdom of Vaelcrest clash, Aureliane immediately blames herself.

I'm not good enough.

Nothing has changed.

I may have become a wife, a mother, and a queen, but I'm still failing everyone.

Her thoughts become harsher than any criticism her rivals could ever speak.

Turning Point — Maybe Difficult Days Aren’t Proof That I’ve Failed

One evening, after another exhausting day, Aureliane finds herself sitting beside her husband, King Thereon.

He notices the exhaustion in her eyes immediately.

“I know you’ve been under a lot of stress lately,” Thereon says gently. “And I know you've been blaming yourself.”

Aureliane lowers her gaze.

Sometimes she forgets that he sees more than she realizes.

“Thereon... what if I'm not doing enough?”

The king reaches for her hand.

“Having difficult days doesn't make you a bad queen,” he says. “It simply means you're human. Problems are not proof that you've failed. They're part of the healing process.”

Before Aureliane can respond, the doors burst open.

Crown Prince Therion and Princess Audrey rush into the room.

“Mommy!” Audrey exclaims as she throws herself into Aureliane’s arms.

Aureliane laughs softly and hugs her daughter.

“Mommy, I know you worked hard trying to solve the conflict between the Duchy of Drav and Count Cloud,” Audrey says proudly. “You're doing well.”

Therion nods in agreement.

For a moment, Aureliane feels something shift inside her.

Maybe Thereon is right.

Maybe healing is not about avoiding problems.

Maybe it is about facing them differently.

Learning What Staying Actually Means

The next day, Aureliane returns to her duties as Queen of Vaelcrest.

The challenges have not disappeared.

The conflicts remain.

The responsibilities remain.

But something about her approach has changed.

Later that week, Duchess Drav and Countess Cloud begin arguing during a royal tea party.

Their disagreement quickly escalates.

In the past, Aureliane might have panicked.

She might have doubted herself.

Instead, she remains calm.

She listens carefully.

She intervenes firmly.

And when neither noblewoman shows signs of stopping, she reminds them that they are free to leave if they cannot behave respectfully.

The room falls silent.

The conflict ends.

Not because Aureliane is fearless.

But because she chooses to stay.

The Quiet Courage of Small Things

Growth rarely arrives in dramatic moments.

Most of the time, it looks surprisingly ordinary.

Sometimes staying means answering a letter from her brother, Aetherion, instead of ignoring it.

Sometimes it means attending a meeting despite feeling anxious.

Sometimes it means getting through an exhausting day without giving up.

Aureliane begins to understand that healing is built through small acts of courage repeated over time.

Not through perfection.

Not through sudden transformation.

Just one small step at a time.

A New Definition of Strength

As queen, Aureliane still has moments when she loses her patience.

There are days when she speaks too sharply during discussions about infrastructure projects and kingdom affairs.

There are days when stress overwhelms her.

But there are also days when she remains calm in the middle of chaos.

Days when she chooses kindness instead of self-criticism.

Days when she gives herself grace.

She realizes that strength is not about never struggling.

Strength is allowing yourself to struggle without turning against yourself.

She doesn't have to be positive every minute of every day.

She doesn't have to be perfectly calm.

She only has to keep trying.

And that is enough.

Acceptance — I Can Have Difficult Days and Still Be Healing

The person Aureliane is becoming makes her smile.

Not because life has become easier.

But because she now understands something important:

Difficult emotions and personal growth can exist at the same time.

One afternoon, while walking through the gardens of Ironhall Citadel, Therion runs toward her.

“Mommy, I missed you.”

Aureliane kneels and pulls him into a hug.

“I missed you too, my prince.”

She still feels worry.

She still feels pressure.

She still experiences sadness, fear, longing, and uncertainty.

Being queen does not make her immune to human emotions.

And for the first time, she no longer believes she needs to hide them.

Final Thoughts

Does Aureliane’s story resonate with you?

Maybe today wasn't your most productive day.

Maybe you're carrying difficult emotions that no one else can see.

Perhaps you're navigating unemployment, struggling to rebuild after a painful breakup, grieving a loss, or simply trying to survive a difficult season of life.

Whatever you're facing, remember this:

It is okay to feel sad.

It is okay to feel frustrated.

It is okay to feel heartbroken.

You do not have to solve everything today.

You do not need to have all the answers.

Sometimes healing is simply choosing to stay with yourself through the difficult moments instead of abandoning yourself when things get hard.

And for today, that is more than enough.
