Easter Story: Proof of Jesus’ Unconditional Love

Gambar
Happy Easter! We’ve journeyed through the sacred season of Lent—beginning with Ash Wednesday, continuing through Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and finally arriving at the joy of Easter Sunday. Rather than retelling the entire Easter story, this article highlights powerful moments that reveal Jesus Christ’s unconditional love for humanity. 1. The Cross: The Ultimate Sacrifice of Love One of the greatest demonstrations of unconditional love is found in Jesus’ death on the cross. “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” — John 3:16 Despite our imperfections and sins, Jesus chose to sacrifice Himself for us. His death was not just an event—it was an act of atonement , a redemption for all humanity. Even in His suffering, His love never wavered. This moment reminds us that love is not conditional. Jesus didn’t wait for us to be perfect—He loved us first. 2. Healing the Bleedi...

Breaking the Silence: Confession as a Step Toward Mental and Spiritual Healing

Gambar
In many faith communities, the act of confession is often misunderstood — seen only as admitting sins rather than embracing healing. But what if confession could be the key to both mental and spiritual recovery ? 🌿 The Healing Power of Confession A study titled “Religious Confession and Symptom Severity” involving 320 people across various religions (Buddhist, Catholic, Protestant, Muslim) found that those who practiced confession experienced lower levels of mental symptoms — such as obsessions and hostility — especially in communities that provided emotional and spiritual support. Source: PubMed Last Sunday, I decided to confess about my addiction to a counselor through a church program called Ruang Sahabat. To be honest, I almost backed out. It felt terrifying — but the sermon that day reminded me that “openness is the first step toward healing.” When I finally confessed, I didn’t receive judgment. Instead, I felt relieved . My counselor listened with compassion and helped...

Overcoming Loneliness & Isolation in Faith Communities

Gambar
In my previous article, we discussed how faith and therapy can work hand in hand to support mental health. In this article, I want to explore a topic that is often hidden in religious spaces: the loneliness and isolation people with mental health struggles feel in their faith communities . Why Does Loneliness Happen in Faith Communities? Even though places of worship are meant to be safe spaces, many people feel disconnected. Here are some reasons why: Feeling different – Living with depression, anxiety, or other mental health challenges can create a sense of “I don’t belong here.” That feeling often grows into isolation. Stigma from fellow believers – Some fear being judged as “not spiritual enough,” or even accused of weak faith. Excessive positivity culture – In many churches, mosques, or temples, members are encouraged to share blessings, but not struggles. This culture of “constant happiness” makes people hide their pain. Internal alienation – Some attend s...

Faith and Therapy: How Spirituality and Professional Help Can Work Together

Gambar
In my previous article, I discussed the stigma surrounding mental illness—how people are often told they have weak faith or need an exorcism. These harmful beliefs cause many faithful individuals to hesitate seeking help, fearing isolation from their spiritual communities. 📊 The Reality in Indonesia • WHO (2022): Indonesia has only 0.3 psychiatrists per 100,000 people—far below the global standard. Therapy is hard to access and often expensive. • American Journal of Psychiatry (2021): The best recovery outcomes come from combining professional therapy, prayer, and faith-based community support. Faith and therapy are not enemies. They can walk hand in hand—complementing, not canceling, each other. ❌ Why People Avoid Professional Help 1. Stigma and Fear Beliefs like “mental illness means weak faith” or “you’re possessed” lead people to hide their struggles. They fear being labeled “crazy” or rejected by their religious community. This isolation only deepens the pain. Instead o...

Breaking the Silence: How to Overcome Mental Health Stigma in Faith Communities

Gambar
Introduction In many faith communities, stories about mental health often remain unspoken. Imagine someone struggling with depression or experiencing hallucinations who finally opens up to fellow members. Instead of finding the safe and supportive space they hoped for, they are misjudged—even isolated from the very community they trusted. Rather than being embraced with compassion and told “it’s okay,” they are given ultimatums: pray harder, believe more, or even undergo an exorcism. In many places, hallucinations are automatically linked to demonic possession—a painful misconception I’ve written about in another article. Common Stigmas in Faith Communities About Mental Illness “Not praying hard enough” or “not believing enough.” Mental illness is often seen as a sign of weak faith or insufficient devotion. This creates guilt and shame rather than healing. Avoidance of community. Because of stigma, many who struggle with mental health issues become afraid to attend r...
