The Life I’m Learning to Keep #4 — Learning to Stay on Difficult Days
Some Days Still Feel Heavy
For a long time, Li Wei believed that healing meant eventually feeling okay all the time. He thought that once he had overcome his struggles, difficult days would disappear completely.
But life doesn’t work that way.
As the lead architect at his family’s architecture firm, challenging days still arrive without warning. One of those days came when a client requested major changes to a factory project in Guangzhou. The building was scheduled to begin construction within days, yet the client suddenly complained about the overall design and demanded a complete redesign.
Li Wei felt the weight of responsibility settle heavily on his shoulders.
The negotiations became tense. Every meeting seemed to end in disagreement. No matter how many solutions Li Wei proposed, the client continued insisting on changes.
By the end of the week, exhaustion had already begun to take hold.
Awareness — Learning That Healing Isn’t Constant Happiness
One morning, Li Wei woke up in his apartment in Guangzhou after spending nearly an entire night revising blueprints. Eventually, the client had agreed to the new design, but the victory felt hollow.
He was physically exhausted.
His wife, Su Ning, was currently in Beijing preparing for her year-end piano concert. The apartment felt unusually quiet without her presence.
As he prepared for another long day at the construction site, Li Wei noticed a familiar feeling returning.
Disconnection.
Some days, despite all his progress, he still felt distant from himself.
Slowly, he was learning an important truth:
Healing does not erase difficult emotions overnight.
Conflict — The Part of Me That Wants to Give Up
Just when things seemed to be improving, another setback appeared.
A series of legal complications forced the factory project to halt for an entire week.
The delay created uncertainty, financial pressure, and endless paperwork.
With every new problem, Li Wei felt his old habits resurfacing.
Years ago, whenever life became overwhelming, he would isolate himself. He would stop answering calls, avoid conversations, and convince himself that disappearing was easier than facing reality.
Now, those same thoughts were beginning to return.
Maybe I should just give up.
Maybe I'm not capable of handling this.
One evening, while sitting alone in his apartment, Li Wei listened to the faint sound of piano music through a video call.
On the other side of the screen, Su Ning was practicing for her concert.
The familiar melody brought him comfort.
For a moment, he felt relieved.
Yet he also realized something important:
Having someone beside you does not automatically solve your problems.
Sometimes healing means facing them anyway.
Fear — What If I'm Becoming My Old Self Again?
As the weeks passed, Li Wei and Su Ning worked together to find solutions and keep the project moving forward.
Still, doubt continued to creep into his mind.
Was he really capable of leading this project?
Had all his progress been an illusion?
Was he falling back into the person he used to be?
One evening, as they talked, Su Ning looked at him gently and said:
“一切都会好起来的,别担心。”
"Everything will work out. Don't worry."
Li Wei lowered his eyes.
"I'm afraid," he admitted.
Su Ning waited quietly.
"I'm afraid I'm becoming my old self again."
The words felt heavy, but saying them aloud made them easier to carry.
Reflection — Healing Was Never Meant to Remove Every Hard Day
Su Ning shared her own experiences.
She told him about the difficult periods she had faced while pursuing her music career. The anxiety before performances. The loneliness during long periods of practice. The fear of failure that sometimes kept her awake at night.
Then she smiled softly.
"Healing was never meant to remove every hard day."
Li Wei listened carefully.
"As humans, we'll always experience sadness, exhaustion, grief, fear, and uncertainty," she continued. "Those emotions aren't signs that we're failing. They're part of being alive."
The goal, she explained, wasn't to become perfect.
The goal was simply to stay.
To stay present.
To stay connected.
To stay even when things felt difficult.
Turning Point — Staying Doesn't Have to Look Impressive
For the first time, Li Wei considered that she might be right.
Maybe resilience wasn't something dramatic.
Maybe healing wasn't about winning every battle.
Maybe it was about showing up anyway.
The next morning, he returned to work.
Not with confidence.
Not with certainty.
But with willingness.
He reviewed documents one at a time.
He organized schedules.
He supervised construction progress.
He gave directions to site supervisors.
He handled problems as they appeared.
Slowly but surely, the factory began taking shape.
Every completed wall became proof that progress was still possible.
Process — Learning Not to Abandon Myself
One evening, after another long day, Su Ning sat beside her husband.
She shared a technique she had learned from her therapist.
“你可以尝试在素描本上画出你每天感受到的各种情绪。”
"You can try drawing the emotions you experience each day in a sketchbook."
At first, Li Wei wasn't sure it would help.
But he decided to try.
Every night, he opened a sketchbook.
Some pages contained rough lines and dark shadows.
Others were filled with brighter shapes and calmer scenes.
There were no rules.
No expectations.
Only honesty.
Day after day, he allowed his emotions to exist without judgment.
Instead of running from his feelings, he gave them space.
Instead of abandoning himself, he stayed.
And little by little, that made a difference.
Redefining Strength — Staying Present During Difficult Times
Months later, the day of the factory's grand opening finally arrived.
Standing in front of the completed building, Li Wei felt something he hadn't felt in a long time.
Pride.
Not because everything had gone perfectly.
Not because he had never struggled.
But because he had remained present through every challenge.
He now understood that strength wasn't pretending to be okay.
Strength was remaining connected to yourself even when you were hurting.
The factory standing before him was more than a successful project.
It was proof that difficult days could be survived.
Acceptance — Difficult Days Do Not Erase Progress
Eventually, Li Wei and Su Ning returned home to Beijing.
Life continued.
New challenges appeared.
Stressful days still arrived.
Moments of self-doubt still surfaced from time to time.
One evening, Li Wei once again found himself struggling with fears from his past.
Sensing his anxiety, Su Ning gently took his hand.
Then she reminded him of everything he had already overcome.
With a warm smile, she said:
“既然你能克服过去的困难,也一定能克服现在的困难!”
"If you overcame your struggles in the past, you can overcome the struggles you're facing now too!"
Li Wei smiled.
Maybe the difficult days would never disappear completely.
But he no longer needed them to.
He had learned something more valuable.
He had learned how to stay.
Did Li Wei's story resonate with you or someone close to you?
Maybe healing isn't about never having difficult days again.
Maybe healing is about learning how to stay with yourself when those days arrive.
To stay through the fear.
To stay through the exhaustion.
To stay through the uncertainty.
And sometimes, that's enough.
Today, even quietly...
I stayed.
