3 Reasons Why I Chose Amsterdam as the Setting for Double Minority Hanna

As many of you may already know from reading my novel Double Minority Hanna, I previously shared the inspiration behind the story, which comes from personal experiences and my community. In this article, I want to delve into why I chose Amsterdam as the setting for Double Minority Hanna and how it plays a vital role in Hanna’s journey.

1. Mental Health Support and Recovery Environment in Amsterdam
One of the key reasons I chose Amsterdam is its robust mental health support system and recovery-friendly environment. The city is home to communities, organizations, and a cultural attitude that promotes a positive outlook on mental illness. This is why Hanna, following her brother's suggestion, moves to Amsterdam. The environment contrasts sharply with that of Indonesia, where mental health stigma is prevalent and mental illness is often misunderstood as violence or weakness. In Amsterdam, Hanna finds fewer people willing to bully her, thanks to the city's more progressive stance on mental health.

2. Social Environment and Inspiration in Amsterdam
Amsterdam also offers a dynamic social environment that directly influences the novel. There are interconnected mental health challenges, especially within schools, and despite some lingering stigma, the city strives to break free from it. As Hanna discovers, the bullying she experienced in Indonesia continues, but Amsterdam offers a stronger support system through mental health groups and communities. This supportive network becomes a crucial aspect of her recovery.

3. Cultural and Social Significance of Amsterdam
Beyond the mental health aspect, Amsterdam's diverse and open culture plays a significant role in the novel. The city is more tolerant and accepting, compared to the social climate in Indonesia, where a lack of psychiatrists and a more intolerant society prevail. Hanna's struggle with religious and cultural prejudice, especially from characters like Bayu, who resents her for being Christian and having connections to Holland, highlights this contrast. Amsterdam is a sanctuary for Hanna to explore her identity and recover from the trauma.

Conclusion:
Amsterdam's unique mix of mental health support, social environment, and cultural diversity makes it the perfect setting for Double Minority Hanna. It influences the plot and shapes Hanna’s growth and recovery in ways that would not be possible in other settings.
