4 steps to create a mental health friendly resolution

Happy new year! You’ve done well last year may this year be a great year for you too!

Do you usually write New Year’s resolutions? Me too and I regularly evaluate it on December 31st. As a mentally ill person most of the time I feel pessimistic because for like five years I’ve been on the same medication dosage that makes me stagnant in my mental illness journey. Most of the time, you feel like it's great to even survive right?

This year, let’s talk about 4 steps to create a mental health-friendly resolution.

# 1 Focus on achievable resolutions

Don’t write I will be free from this mental illness anymore because realistically it just doesn’t happen that fast! Believe me, I did it last year but didn’t accomplish it at the end of the year but I’m making progress that’s a good thing right? Focus first on stabilizing and controlling your emotions or taking your medication regularly which can help you to get your dosage of medication reduced.

# 2 Practice self-compassion

In every resolution I usually get three things to point out: Yet, Not Yet and making progess. Learn to be greateful when you’re making progress for example you dosage of medichine reduced or maybe you started to work out full month! Don’t forget to celebrate every small wins like treating yourself your favourite food or check out your wishlist.

# 3 Set intentions instead of resolutions

Set intention like I prioritize self care, I will try to take a break for my mental health. This is more forgiving. For example I set a goal for my 2024 Resolution to maybe find a side job eventough I did not yet achive it still I can forgive myself especially when I didn’t find my main job yet.

# 4 Incorporate mental health goals

As mentioned in # 1 step. Incorporate your mental health goals like taking your medicine regularly or maybe being more active in your mental illness community that’s also a great start.

Creating mental health-friendly resolutions means prioritizing kindness to yourself and setting realistic, achievable goals that align with your well-being journey. Remember, progress isn’t linear, and it’s okay to have setbacks as long as you keep moving forward. Celebrate small victories, practice self-compassion, and always acknowledge that surviving and striving are already significant accomplishments. Let 2024 be the year you grow at your own pace, with resolutions that nurture your mental health.
